EBC - i am easy to inspire

Description

In the morning by the sea
As the fog clears from the sand
I have no money in my hand
I have no home, I have no land

But it doesn’t trouble me
As I lay beside the fire
I am easy to inspire
There is little I require

I wasn’t yours and you weren’t mine
Though I’ve wished from time to time
We had found a common ground
Your voice was such a welcome sound

How the emptiness would fill
With the waves and with your song
People find where they belong
Or keep on

Through the never-ending maze
Where the way is seldom clear
There is no map or compass near
I drive a ship I cannot steer

Through the bleak and early morn
Where a stronger will is sworn
Where the moments move so slow
And seem to never let you go

When my hands are old and ache
And my memory flickers dim
And my bones don’t hold my skin
There’s no place I haven’t been

I recall the days were few
That is all that I can do
Feel the carvings in the tree
That gives shade for you and me

The Wolves and the Ravens by Rogue Valley

"You comin'? Got somethin' to show ya."

"I know. You've told me at least ten times."

Laertes smiled back at Thalia who was caught on a branch or something. He faced forward again, trying to get a good glimpse through the trees at his destination. There was a bit of light peaking through the trees on the top of the hill.

"I can't believe you're not dragging me to the cave today," Thalia said, exasperated.

"Yeah, well," Taze started, but didn't continue. He didn't want to tell her where they were going, or why they were trekking so far, or why he had even asked permission from Evander to come all the way out here. It was a long ways. They had to sneak through Fire's territory to come here, since he really didn't feel like risking walking through Massilia to show her something that probably wouldn't even mean that much to her. Or maybe it would. He didn't know. Honestly, he just kind of wanted to come out to see it himself. It had been a while.

He paused to let her catch up, then proceeded up the steep slope until he reached what he knew would be a sharp drop off. He knew this because when he had been sneaking away with Cassandra, she had pushed him down, where he promptly landed in a nice pile of some sort of dung.

Gods, most of that trip had been a complete disaster.

But when he reached the top this time, he didn't fall. He stopped, waited for Thalia to catch up, then took in the scene he had almost forgotten about.

The territory beyond the great and powerful Empires seemed so much greater and more powerful than anything else. To the right was the sea, blue and striking from the midday sun. To the left was the forest, thick and mountainous. Here and there a pine tree popped up, and where the land and the sea met was a line of rocks that sometimes jutted out of the water like they had let go of their grip on the rest of their family on shore. If Taze looked closely, he could see seagulls swooping around, fighting over something on one of the rocks. Existing.

The sunlight hit the top of the trees and made some of them light up with bright greens and yellows and some of them were darkened almost black. Far off in the distance was a stretch of land Taze liked to think was Rome, though that was probably unlikely. He just wanted to know that Thalia could have watched him from where she was and he could have watched back.

"Taze..." she was saying.

Right. He had almost forgotten she was with him.

He looked back at her, at her silky gray fur and concerned yellow eyes. He gave her a small smile and looked back to the unknown territory. "That's where I was," he explained. "I went out there. I followed the shoreline with Cassie. We...we got all the way to Rome." He paused for another moment, looking out at the vast expanse of trees and water and everything. "It's so beautiful out there," he added quietly.

"There's a whole other world out there, full of cats we've never met and things we've never experienced. There's a world full of tree caves that we could hide in and things to discover and learn and..." He trailed off, unsure of where he was going with this whole speech.

"Taze," Thalia said. He didn't look at her. He didn't look away from the forest. "If...if you're trying to prove to me that you came back for me, you...you don't have to prove that."

Taze's blue eyes finally turned to meet her yellow ones again. "I'm...I know that. But I wanted to show you where I'd been. The places I'd seen. I wish you could have been there with me. I wish I would have told you." And he did. He would have given anything to make that trip with Thalia. He would have given anything to have her at his side. But would she have been safe in Rome? With Venator and Ben and Scaeden? Would they even have made it that far without Cassie's help?

"Taze, tell me what happened."

His head automatically flew back to look at the forest. Somewhere, out there, was Hercules's dead body, rotting away. Somewhere was Scaeden's Roman armor, where he had insisted on leaving it and burying it so no one would find it. Somewhere out there was some upturned dirt from the fight between Scaeden and Taze, when the leopard was sure he was going to die. Somewhere out there were some scratches in tree trunks where Cassie had decided to mark their way for them to return if they ever so chose. Somewhere out there was Taze's childhood and innocence. Somewhere out there was his mother.

"I'm afraid," Taze admitted. "I'm afraid you'll be angry with me." Hercules's gargled, ragged breathing. "I'm afraid you won't trust me." Scaeden's trustworthy eyes and helpful advice. "I'm afraid you'll want nothing to do with me." Cassandra turning and sprinting into the forest where she was likely caught by Bounty Hunters and killed. He looked down at his paws, somehow managing not to shake.

Since she couldn't promise him anything and she didn't know if she'd be angry with him and she didn't know what he had done and she didn't know anything and she was probably afraid, too, all Thalia said was, "It's okay."

But it wasn't.

It really wasn't okay.

"Let's go home," Laertes said. He'd tell her. He'd tell her soon.
